It has been a number of weeks since Peckings last graced the pages of the Argus and during this time it has been most productive at the Roosters Nest.

Things have been happening on a number of fronts, what with the building project progressing, the football department talking with prospective and continuing players, the management team plotting a path for next season and the recent appointment of a Facility Manager to run the day to day operations of the building once it is in full swing.

Last Friday night saw the Strathalbyn Football Club hold its Annual General Meeting and it was here there was a bit of a changing of the guard, with the Club’s President, Andrew Batten, who has been in charge for the last 10 years stepping aside and the election and appointment of a new President, long time Club servant, Rob Donaldson taking up the challenge.

A well-attended meeting applauded and thanked Batts for his service and he assured the group he was not going anywhere – just a little sideways and continuing a role with the Clubs Committee – “as there were a couple of parties to attend yet” with the completion of the building project getting closer.

Rob, who has been a past A Grade runner, assistant coach, senior coach and a part of the Committee for the last 12 months looks forward to the challenge and is excited about the future and what the Club is building. He also sees a huge potential for the facility to be utilised by the whole community for any number of purpose and welcomes Marcia Evans as the Facility Manager.

Marcia comes to the Club with a great background in event and facility management and has worked with a number of non-profit organisations for a long time now. Marcia also has a history with Strathalbyn as past owner of High Street Books and working on the Commerce Association. After moving back to Strathalbyn a couple of years ago she is now back in the thick of the Community.

With all this in mind the building project is steaming ahead at a great rate with walls and things happening in the upstairs section, the ceilings, bar, bathrooms and other areas nearing completion in the down stairs section. The large front windows and then the veranda are about to go onto the front of the building and this will see the completion the shell of the facility and passers-by might have noticed that the upstairs section has also been given a lick of paint.

All this bodes well for not only the upcoming football season but for all users of the facility and if you have a thought along those lines then Marcia is the person you need to be speaking too. Her contact number is 0499006534 or you can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and she will make sure you get looked after.

This is also an opportunity to say that the club bar is also open Thursday nights from around 6:00 till the last person leaves and Saturday afternoons – where you can watch a bit of cricket, shoot the breeze or just chill out in the nearly finished club – again the place will be open pretty much until the last person leaves.

Remember this Club is for your use and there are big things happening in the not too distant future.

Peckings is super excited and looking forward to catching up with all of you at the new front bar!

See you at the Club and Go the Community

Grand Final

Well the footy season is over for another year unless of course you count the SANFL or AFL then you have another couple of weeks of finals to go to or just follow.

Peckings congratulates Mt Compass on a great year and a well-deserved and hard won Premiership last Saturday. The whole Grand Final day was well run by the Encounter Bay Football Club who also had the extra load with their A Grade team playing on the day.

The Roosters are already in planning mode for 2017 with the wheels in motion at the Club looking at who might play on, who might retire, who might leave. Then looking at recruits with the Player Payment cap and Player Points Scheme looking down on the club. It is will all those permutations that the Club needs to

Preliminary Final

Well that is the end of that – knocked out in the Preliminary Final by the smallest of margins… The Roosters had their chances and with the siren imminent could have iced the game. But some things just don’t happen to script and like everything in this game you make your opportunities and you must then take your opportunities.

Saturday’s game was a game of inches and with the quarter break scores all within a point of two at each turn it was always delicately balanced. And those few missed opportunities like the bad decisions were all, in the scheme of things, important little percentage points in that kind of close game.

Well done to the players, well done to the support staff and well done to the supporters that headed off to not only this big game but all the other games throughout the season and to all points of the Fleurieu and enjoyed watching the Rooster boys play the game that is so dear to us all.
