Sunday saw the sun shining, the Strathalbyn oval bright green and the huge number of youngsters having fun at the Strathalbyn Football Club inaugural Family Fun Day.

With the serious stuff a week off the Football Club opened its doors for a season opening event that was aimed at families and friends and the public in general. A number of people took the opportunity to join in and this included a number of new comers to the club and everybody had a great time as the weather was kind and it was a great afternoon to be in the outdoors.

At one stage during the afternoon it looked like the oval was covered with small face painted people and their mums and dads as they had fun on the bouncy castle and took part in the little competitions run by a number of the senior players from the club.

The Club opened its doors to show off the upgraded and renovated football clubrooms so far and a number of people took advantage of the guided tours through the partially complete facility.

The Colts Committee boys served up a delicious BBQ and there were cool drinks to be had. Every small person that took part was seen at one stage slurping on an icy pole and the culmination of the day saw the 2016 coaches, a number new to the Roosters, being the target of a water balloon barrage!

It was, indeed, a fun day.

A number of attendees took the opportunity to purchase a “virtual” brick for the sum of $50.00 with the money going towards the upgrade of the clubrooms and facilities. The Club has a target of $50,000 or 1000 “bricks” and at this stage are about half way towards that total.

“It would be really great if everyone in Strathalbyn got behind the development, and put their name on at least one brick.” Roosters President, Andrew Batten, said, “After all, we are building this as a community facility, for all to use.” He went on to say.

So there is a challenge jump on the Roosters website (www.strathfootyclub.com.au) and download a form, fill it in and forward this, with payment, to the Club, or pay online by direct deposit. You and your community will benefit from this simple act.

Saturday saw all the Roosters teams (Minis, Junior and Senior Colts, Reserves and A Grade) drive up the hill to Balhannah for a trial hit out against Onkaparinga Valley.

The Mini and Junior Colts came up against teams that were older and bigger but given that they did not give up at any stage and would have learnt lots from the experience.

The Senior Colts played a group lads that were fairly evenly matched in both age and size and the lads and coaches would have also gained a lot from the game.

A full team of Reserves played a great brand of footy and were very competitive and whilst trailing for most of the game managed to sneak in by a point when the final siren went.

In the last game of the day gave the new coach something to look at and whilst the full complement was not available the Roosters had a decent crack at the Hills Bulldogs. The Red Men started very well then let Onkas get on top until late in the last quarter when Strath kept the ball in their forward half to have a few shots to keep the Goal Umpire busy. With about 2 minutes to go the Roosters hit the front and then another sealed the game for the Reds.

A great hit out for all involved leading to this week’s opening game at Encounter Bay against the reigning premiers.

See you at the footy and Go the Roosters!

Grand Final

Well the footy season is over for another year unless of course you count the SANFL or AFL then you have another couple of weeks of finals to go to or just follow.

Peckings congratulates Mt Compass on a great year and a well-deserved and hard won Premiership last Saturday. The whole Grand Final day was well run by the Encounter Bay Football Club who also had the extra load with their A Grade team playing on the day.

The Roosters are already in planning mode for 2017 with the wheels in motion at the Club looking at who might play on, who might retire, who might leave. Then looking at recruits with the Player Payment cap and Player Points Scheme looking down on the club. It is will all those permutations that the Club needs to

Preliminary Final

Well that is the end of that – knocked out in the Preliminary Final by the smallest of margins… The Roosters had their chances and with the siren imminent could have iced the game. But some things just don’t happen to script and like everything in this game you make your opportunities and you must then take your opportunities.

Saturday’s game was a game of inches and with the quarter break scores all within a point of two at each turn it was always delicately balanced. And those few missed opportunities like the bad decisions were all, in the scheme of things, important little percentage points in that kind of close game.

Well done to the players, well done to the support staff and well done to the supporters that headed off to not only this big game but all the other games throughout the season and to all points of the Fleurieu and enjoyed watching the Rooster boys play the game that is so dear to us all.
